  • Simple, Elegant, Effective

This is the best text editor on the App Store. Ulysses is good if you are working on long projects. Bear is nice for notes. But this is the highest quality general-purpose text app. It’s simple to use, elegant and effective. One of the best things about it is that it uses the Apple Files.app interface. I like that I can see files rather than work in a container. There’s also a lot of power underneath if you dig though the docs. Better yet there’s no recurring costs. Note - works best with iCloud Drive. Would like a passcode lock and pure black mode for iPhone X but those are small requests.

It’s addictive to use. Still the best tool for focused writing on phone and computer. Feel a slight delay in opening the tool panel which seems to get in the way a bit... like there’s always a hang. Let me clarify. It’s the first tool bar hit after launch usually. Frequent use doesn’t have a delay, but just enough occasionally that it’s noticeable.
  • Used to be my go-to writing app until lost Dropbox support

I still use this app a lot, but once Dropbox support disappeared, it has become a hassle to use, because most of my writing is on Dropbox. I know the change came because of the Dropbox API being withdrawn or turned off by Dropbox, but still, it has caused problems with my writing workflow. Just raised my rating because of support response! That’s great that you’re working on it. Hopefully, Dropbox will unclench and let others use their system, instead of forcing their own lame editing apps on us all :)
  • This is a New App, Not An Update

Billed as an update, but upon installing it did not import all my documents from the prior version. Waste of time, waste of $5.
  • Works Great For Me

One of those apps that gives you an uncluttered, distraction free place to just bust out on a writing jag. It is also a powerful tool for formatting if and when you need it, which makes this app the best of both worlds. I use it on my iPhone 8, iPad Pro and on a MacBook Pro and it syncs perfectly without any hassle. The developer is also not raping you with pricing or subscriptions although for further development I wouldn’t mind some IAPs or tip jar to show some gratitude for all of the dev’s hard work. There are also great tutorials if you want to take your writing to another level or format in a slew of different ways. PS: Don't know what the iCloud beef is about but I would prefer it to Dropbox, any day!
  • Miss the old keyboard

I write directly on my iPad a lot, and got the original is write because of the clean interface and perfect keyboard set up. Now the keyboard is pretty much like the iOS keyboard. If the goal is not to take my hands off the keys, why make the user learn a bunch of new shortcuts and whip out a Bluetooth keyboard? Also not terribly fond of the split screen file view. It’s way faster and more efficient for looking through files, but I kind I like the basic version. This still isn’t a bad app and I use it daily, but I don’t see what sets it apart originally anymore.
  • My favorite text editor, when it’s stable...

Let me start by saying that iA Writer is my favorite app for writing everything from checklists and quick notes to long blog posts. I’ve been using iA Writer basically since iA launched its first iPad app and it’s among my top-3 most-used apps today. Today, I use both the Mac and iOS apps (on my iPhone and iPad Pro), and despite some rare issues with version/syncing conflicts, I’ve so far had a seamless and joyful experience using the app. It’s the app that showed me the full expressive potential of Markdown. This being said, the iOS apps, specifically the current version of the iPhone app, has some serious stability issues. The app crashes whenever I open a new or existing document. It happens regardless of whether my phone is plugged in or on battery power. Thinking it may have been a syncing issue, I tried turning off WiFi and cellular data and it still crashes. I wholeheartedly recommend this app when it’s on a stable release.
  • Great, stable, minimalist

Does what it needs to, and beautifully at that. My only gripe: Since a duo-spaced font has been added, I would absolutely love the option to choose serif or sans serif for the editor as well. Personally, my eyes have a difficult time reading mono or duospaced.
  • Another boring...yawn...

Markdown writer. Aren’t there enough already? I don’t even like Markdown and see absolutely no use for it. Any writing app worthy of my iPad Pro must have at a minimum the option to look up synonyms. Deleting now.
  • Nice and simple, but lacks attention to detail.

I want to love this app, but two things are standing in the way. First, you can’t adjust margins independently of font size. Very annoying. The far larger problem, however, is poor support for the “virtual trackpad” cursor handling on the iPad. It isn’t entirely broken, but it is erratic enough to avoid entirely, in practice. For serious writing and editing, this is almost a fatal flaw.
