  • Great workouts, but app and interface need work

    The workouts are top notch. I am always challenged. I have a few complaints: - overall, the interface is not really all that great. It could use a lot of work. For example, it would be nice if the app wouldn’t restart every time I switch between the app and another. So like I don’t really use the meal plans, but it often takes me back to that page. I would rather just stay on the workout page. But there are a lot of things that could be done to improve the interface. - most importantly, the app doesn’t remember where I am in a workout plan. For example, I am doing the Slim 60. I don’t do it every day, and sometimes when I return to the app, it takes me to day 6 when I’m on day 9, or will even start at the beginning. This is probably a bug. And when I go to the calendar, it doesn’t even tell me which day I did, it just says that I did a Slim 60 workout. It would be nicer if the calendar that tracks your progress gave more details. - I would also appreciate it if at some point, Jillian would explain how to do new moves correctly. Maybe there could be a “tutorial section,” or when the move is played for the first time, Jillian could give a few more directions... like “use your core, not your back”. - wish there were a few more songs in the default playlist. It’s perfect music but it repeats twice before a 20 min workout is over....I’m paying monthly for the app so might as well have a few more songs in there!

    PLEASE add a feature that allows to search recipes by ingredients. Then I wouldn’t have to tap on every single recipe to find out if it uses a particular ingredient I have on hand that I need to use up before it goes bad. Also being able to access some of the recipes from the other diet plans would be nice on the omnivore plan so I don’t have to eat meat every night. And either marking recipes as ones I don’t like or being able to input food preferences/allergies would be a great asset. I don’t eat seafood but a vast majority of the recipes contain it so i am constantly having to substitute those. Give a little more guidance on the calories and macronutrient choices that go into each meal and how they pertain to me personally so I have a better idea how to eat if I choose to go outside the plan. And adding more grab and go options would be fantastic as I don’t always have time to buy the long list of ingredients given on some of the recipes, let alone make four meals out of them every single day. The app also claims to pull diet info from other apps like fitness pal but as far as I can tell all it does is open the other app for me. Nothing actually gets transferred to the JM app. Nor can I get it connect to the health app on my phone despite having granted “access”. Overall I like this app but it could definitely use some improvements.

    The workouts are great as are the meal plans and recipes. Five stars for these. My issues are that they don’t sync well between my iPhone and iPad and not even within the app. The meal plan or workout page does not sync with the “my day” page. If you miss a day, you can’t reset it to wherever you want, you can only reset to the very beginning. If you want to log a different food item, you have to enter something from scratch and know the calorie count, you can’t select another item from the meal plan or recipes. The tracker part needs a lot of work and the syncing issue.

    First, I love Jillian. I have done so many of her programs. I listen to her podcast and she is just wonderful. Having said that, I am beyond frustrated with this app. The concepts is incredible! The detail that went into this is just insane and we have to all bow at the level of hard work that Jillian and her team of developers had to go through. Having said that, you have 3 seconds to go from one exercise to the next and it’s pretty much a complete surprise what’s coming up next unless you have memorized every single exercise she performs. During the three seconds that you get before moving to the next move, it is grayed out so you can’t see if it’s a standing move or a lay-down move or bench or what. You find out when the grey is gone and you discover you are on the ground with a dumbbell when you were suppose to be standing in a lunge. Then you are scrambling to get into form and get your weights and bam, the move is over after you got two seconds to perform it. I connect my phone to my TV and blow the screen up and I still can BARELY tell what a move is if at all. Just take away the grey during the 3 second timer so we can see what she is doing and try to be in the correct position before the timer starts. That would make this app 100 stars for me.

    So disclaimer - I'm already a Jillian fan girl. I own every DVD she's ever release simply cause she gets results and kicks butt. But, this app is honestly the best fitness game out there. Who needs a personal trainer or fitness classes any more! First, I am amazed at just how flexible and responsive this app is for her customized programs. You can set what equipment you have at home, intensity level, and areas to work and instantly an end to end workout is generated for you including warm up and cool down. Second, I love the fact that this app allows you to specify moves in a circuit. I have an ankle injury right now and have to avoid certain pylo moves. Have no fear - Jillian has a near infinite number of moves to choose from. You simply tap it and choose something else and the New move selected will be seamlessly integrated into your program. Third, the programs integration with music is my favorite feature. You can play your own playlist from Spotify or wherever and the app will only slightly dim volume when it's time to start a new move. Love that both can run in parallel without interference. Anyway, love this! My only gripe is sometimes when you swap a move and it appears twice in a circuit, you have to go through and swap each occurrence individually. I wish the changes you make would flow through the whole workout. Each move only appears twice, so it's not too big of a deal.

    Let me start with the positive points 1. The workout I am doing is in segments of 20 seconds, which is enough to start feeling something but not overly taxing in the repetition 2. There is a brief few seconds between each 20 second segment as the video loads. 3. So far on day 4 I have done different exercises (cardio, strength) alternating so your muscles have time to recover as I am not in shape and need recovery. 4. The sessions have been between 20-30 minutes which is do able. Negatives 1. There is no explanation of how to do the exercise. Jillian announces the next exercise but I waste some seconds watching her to see how to do the exercise. I am not fluent in the names of all the exercises 2. The food logs: I don’t live in the US so I don’t have access to all of these ingredients so I wonder if this app will help. 3. I used a Jillian Michaels app a few years ago and I see to remember it having more on it than this one. 4. I live in a flat so it is not possible to do all the jumping necessary for some exercises.
